Obituary for Alfred G. Unger

CHELMSFORD-Alfred George Unger, 71, of Chelmsford, passed away on April 11, 2012. Born on February 3, 1941 in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late Alfred Louis Unger and Louise (Elijah) Unger.

Al was a devoted husband to Rosalind Sandra (Ciampa) Unger for 50 years this April 29. In addition to his loving wife, he had two daughters, Audrey Unger, Susan Unger and her husband John Snoonian and 4 grandchildren Charlotte, Else, Vincent and Dante Snoonian. He is survived by his sister, Marcelle (Unger) Schwartzstein and her husband Martin Schwartzstein of Southlake, Texas, and many wonderful nieces, nephews and cousins, and many good friends.

Al attended the East Coast Aero Tech, and proudly served his country in the United States Coast Guard. After he was honorably discharged, he became a Service Manager for Xerox Corporation, where he worked for 39 years until his retirement.

Al was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed activities in every season. He was a lifetime member of the Lowell Sportsman's Club and the Westford Sportsman's Club. He enjoyed fishing trips on his boat on Lake Winnipesaukee, where he spent many wonderful times with his family and friends. He was also a very experienced backpacker, hiking across many of the highest peaks in the White Mountains, sleeping in lean-tos, bivy-sacks and tents year round. He shared his passion for the outdoors with his wife, daughters, son-in-law, and grandchildren. Together, they enjoyed skiing, snowshoeing, camping, and hiking. He also enjoyed raising and showing Beagles and Great Danes. He loved his truck, his workshop and his boat.

Visitation on Wednesday from 4 to 8 pm at the BLAKE FUNERAL HOME, 24 Worthen St., CHELMSFORD. A graveside service will be held on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. at Fairview Cemetery, Chelmsford. Donations may be made in Al's name to the Lowell Sportsman's Club, P.O. Box 102, Lowell, MA 01853.
