Maxine E  Vaitses
NORTH CHELMSFORD-Maxine Elizabeth (Phinney) Vaitses (Mrs. Paul Stephen Vaitses Jr.), of North Chelmsford died peacefully in her sleep on Saturday morning, September 1, 2012.

Daughter of the late H. Maxwell and Elizabeth J. Phinney, she was born on September 19, 1928 in Boston, MA. Raised in Melrose, MA, she graduated from Melrose High School in 1947 and Kathryn Dell Secretarial School in Boston in 1949. She was an executive secretary at MIT and assistant to several professors including the Dean of Engineering.

On April 15, 1967, she married Paul Stephen Vaitses Jr., an investment broker, Alderman and Mayor of Melrose. They were active members of the First Congregational Churches of Melrose and Fall River (United Church of Christ), where she taught Sunday school for more than twenty years and Paul was deacon. While living in Swansea she owned and operated a successful thrift shop. Maxine and her husband were members of the Mayflower Society and leaders of the local Republican Party Committees. She recently retired as Chairwoman of the Chelmsford Republican Party Committee.

She is survived by her son Paul Maxwell Vaitses, granddaughters Michelle Vaitses and Stephanie Vaitses and great-granddaughter Kimora Vaitses, all of Bristol, RI; brother Keith L. Phinney and his wife Elisabeth of North Chelmsford, brother J. Norval Phinney and his wife Shirley of Hampton, NJ; niece Monique E. Billingsley of Chelmsford, nephew Wimburne D. Phinney of Keller, TX; nephew Kurt W. Phinney of Harrington Park, NJ, and their families; nephew Derrell Phinney of Hampton, NJ and niece Carrie McCarthy of Manly, Auckland, New Zealand and her family.

Maxine was passionate about her faith, her extended family and her beloved country. She will be deeply missed and long remembered by her family and friends.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 8, 2012 at 2:00 P.M. at the Central Congregational Church, One Worthen Street, Chelmsford, MA 01824 (978 256-5931), followed by a collation in Fellowship Hall. Burial will be private at the Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose, MA. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Maxine’s name to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St. Framingham, MA 01701or the music program at Central Congregational Church of Chelmsford, One Worthen St., Chelmsford, MA 01824. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Blake Funeral Home, Chelmsford.
