Obituary for Joan M. Oknos (Wood)

CHELMSFORD- Joan M. (Wood) Oknos, 79 a longtime resident of Chelmsford and former resident of Burlington passed away Friday evening, April 10, 2015 surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of the late George P. Oknos who passed away in 1993.

She was born in Burlington on August 22, 1935, a daughter of the late Fernando and Beatrice (Kennedy) Wood. Joan attended school in Burlington and graduated from Burlington High School.

Joan was employed as an assembler at Artec PCA in Chelmsford. She gave up her job to become a caregiver for her Mother, Beatrice, and then later for her sister, Edith, until their passing.

Joan’s greatest memories were those spent with her children. Joan would be found laughing and smiling as she cherished time spent with her son Peter, who made her the focus of his life, including endless trips to restaurants, shops and drives to Joan’s favorite places. He also cared for her on a daily basis. Joan also looked forward to her son Mark’s weekly phone calls detailing his cross-country adventures. She also shared a fondness for cooking with her daughter Barbara where they would cook together from time to time.

Among other things, Joan loved to go shopping, particularly to the grocery store where she would buy all the ingredients to cook special treats for all her neighbors and friends. She also enjoyed traveling to England several times to visit her brother Bill. She was proud of her English heritage.

Joan is survived by six children, Peter Oknos of Chelmsford, Mark Theall of New Mexico, Barbara Sutton (and her husband John) of Litchfield, NH, Frank, Lori and Deborah; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She is predeceased by a brother, William Kennedy of Manchester, England and two sisters, Edith Pizzano and Ora Orcutt.

Visiting Hours will be held on Tuesday from 4 to 8 pm at the BLAKE FUNERAL HOME, 24 Worthen St. CHELMSFORD. Her Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday at 12 o’clock at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations in Joan’s memory may be made to the American Lung Association, 460 Totten Pond Rd. Suite 400 Waltham, MA 02451.
