Obituary for Roy T. Johnson

CHELMSFORD – Roy T. Johnson, 94, a member of The Greatest Generation, passed away suddenly surrounded by his family on Monday, June 1, 2015 at Lowell General Hospital. He was a lifelong resident of Chelmsford and the beloved husband of the late Evelyn P. (Cilcus) Johnson who died in 2002.

Roy was born in Chelmsford on July 8, 1920 and was the son of the late Wilhelm and Ella (Rose) Johnson.

Roy was a graduate of Chelmsford High School and attended Lowell Textile Institute. He was a gifted multi-sport athlete; while at Chelmsford High School he pitched a no-hitter in 1938. Roy served his country in the United States Army. He was a veteran of the European Theatre of WWII with four battle stars and a unit citation; he landed at Omaha Beach. Following the war, Roy worked at Canada Dry and Factory Mutual before establishing the successful Roy T. Johnson Real Estate and Insurance Agency in Chelmsford.

Roy was very active in the community, he was a life member of the 100 Club, a 50 year member of the William North Lodge, a member of the Aleppo Shrine, the Chelmsford Rotary Club where he was a Paul Harris Fellow, the Pilgrim Commandery #9 K.T., past president of Old Scouts, a charter member of the Chelmsford Lodge of Elks, American Legion Post 212, past chairman of the First Parish Standing Committee, trustee and board member of D’Youville Manor, past member of the Board of Governor’s of Saints Memorial Hospital, past trustee of St. Joseph’s Hospital and past director of the Lanam Club, Vesper Country Club and Lowell Chamber of Commerce.

Roy also enjoyed golfing and was a member of Vesper Country Club, the Baystate Seniors Golf Association, New England Seniors Golf Association and Bermuda Seniors Golf Association; as well as a former member of the Mid-Ocean Club, Riddles Bay Club and Wentworth Golf Club.

Roy is survived by his daughters; Heidi E. Shealy and her husband Dr. Thomas A. Shealy, III of Stratham, NH and Lisa J. Anderson and her husband Richard J. Anderson of East Walpole, four grandchildren; Thomas A. Shealy, IV, Stacy A. Shealy, Jillian E. Anderson and Tyler J. Anderson, his very dear friend Anne Macheras of Chelmsford and several nieces and nephews. Roy was predeceased by his brother, Charles Johnson and sister, Edla Allpass.

At his request, there will be no calling hours and burial will be private. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, June 8, 2015 at 11 o’clock at the First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church, 2 Westford St., Chelmsford.
