CHELMSFORD – Christine (Karelas) Zouzas , age 97, a longtime resident of Chelmsford passed away on Friday, June 12, 2015 at Lowell General Hospital with her loving family by her side. She was the beloved wife of the late George Zouzas, who passed away on October 26, 1981.

She was born in Lowell on August 19, 1917, and was the daughter of the late Demetrios and Demetra (Strategakis) Karelas. Christine was raised and educated in Lowell and attended the Hellenic American Academy and the Bartlett School. She was a graduate of Lowell High School and Lowell Commercial College.

Prior to her retirement, along with her husband, Christine was the owner of the snack bar at DeMoulas at East Gate Plaza in Chelmsford. Earlier in life she had worked as a bookkeeper.

Christine was an active member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Lowell, where she was a member of the church’s Ladies Philoptochos Society and the Daughters of Penelope. She was also a member of the Hellenic Cultural Society, a member and past president of the Parent Teacher Association at the Hellenic American Academy and the Bartlett School, as well as a Girl Scout leader.

Christine, with her friends, initiated the “Tuesday Church Craft Group” making and selling their crafts for the fall fundraiser.
She is survived by her loving daughter, Donna Zouzas of Chelmsford, with whom she lived and who cared for her; her brother-in-law, Samuel Zouzas and his wife Despina of Chelmsford; her sister-in-law, Pauline Zouzas of Chelmsford; her good friends, Heidi Mihos and Cathy Lebaropoulos; and many nieces and nephews.

She was the mother of the late William “Bill” Zouzas, who passed away on July 9, 2013 and the sister of the late Martha Killerby and her husband Walter, Andrew Karelas, George Karelas, and Sophia Karelas, and the sister-in-law of the late Charles Zouzas, Christos and Elizabeth Costos.

Christine’s family would like to thank Dr. Sepulveda and the nurses in Intermediate Care at Lowell General Hospital for their compassion and care.

Visitation will be held at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 62 Lewis St., Lowell, MA 01854 on Wednesday from 9 until 11 am followed by her Funeral Service at 11 o’clock at the church. Interment in Westlawn Cemetery in Lowell. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Christine’s memory to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church Restoration Fund.
