CHELMSFORD – George F. Fonseca, age 91, a resident of Chelmsford, died peacefully Sunday February 14, 2016 at his home surrounded by family. He was the beloved husband of the late Martha J. (Gowell) Fonseca who passed away in 2014.

George was born in Somerville on December 18, 1924, and was the only child born to the late Manuel F. and Esther I (Upton) Fonseca.

In 1943, George enlisted in the United States Army. He achieved the rank of Private First Class and was honorably discharged in 1946. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge under the command of General George S. Patton’s 3rd Army.

Educated at Boston College and Northeastern University, George earned a Masters Degree in physics. George raised his family in Waltham and worked at the United States Army Natick Labs. From there he went on to retire on Cape Cod.

He enjoyed traveling wherever and whenever he could and absolutely loved spending time in the company of his family.

George held membership in the APS- American Physical Society, The Knights of Columbus, The American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Michele and Donald Anderson of N. Dartmouth and Nancy and Michael Silva of Waltham; six grandchildren, Jessica Voci and her husband Joseph, Steven Anderson and his wife Sara, Laura Anderson, Kayla Anderson, Kristen Treacy and her husband Brandon, and Stacey Kerns and her husband James; ten great grandchildren, Madison, Samuel, Nicholas, Jake, Reid, Logan, Paige, Brooke, Emma, and Matthew.

George was predeceased by his best childhood friend Rudy.

Visitation will be held at the Blake Funeral Home, 24 Worthen Street, Chelmsford on Thursday from 9 until 10:30 am followed by his Funeral Mass to be celebrated at 11 o’clock at St. Mary Church, 25 North Rd., Chelmsford.

Interment in MA National Cemetery at Bourne on Thursday at 2:30 pm.
