Obituary for Norman C. "Cy" Locke

Norman C. "Cy"  Locke
LOWELL- Norman C. “Cy” Locke, 93, longtime resident of Chelmsford, died peacefully, Friday, April 29, 2016 at D’Youville Senior Care in Lowell with his wife by his side. He was the beloved husband of Marilyn (Mills) Locke with whom he shared 52 years of marriage.

Norman was born in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada on August 10, 1922. He was the son of the late Cyril and Ruth (Hardy) Locke.

He moved to Billerica in 1925 when his father was appointed principal of Howe High School. Norman attended Billerica Public Schools and graduated Howe High School in 1941.

He enlisted in the United States Coast Guard in 1942 and proudly served his country during WWII aboard the U.S.S New Bedford in the Atlantic and Pacific before he was honorably discharged in 1946.

Norman graduated Magna Cum Laude from Boston University in 1951 with a B.S. in Motion Pictures and Media. He was employed by WNAC-TV, Channel 7 in Boston as Film Editor. He then joined WWOR-TV, Channel 14 in Worcester as production manager in 1953.

He earned his Master’s degree in Educational Media in 1962 from Boston University and joined Chelmsford Public Schools in 1963 as Director of Television and Media Services.

In 1967, Norman joined Boston University School of Education as Director of Television and Television Program Instructor. He was then appointed in 1971 as Image Systems Department Director for Fitchburg State College. In 1981 he assumed position of Professor of Communications Media and retired from Fitchburg State in 1987. Norman was named Professor Emeritus in 1992.

Norman served on Chelmsford Cable TV Commission from 1985 to 1999. He was chairmen for twelve years. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of Chelmsford Telemedia Corporation until 2001.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his cousins of Canada and his nieces, nephews, and many friends.

At Norman’s request, a private graveside service will be held for his family and friends at Heart Pond Cemetery in Chelmsford.
