In 1959, he was invited to the United States to work. Gerrit was employed as a principal engineer for Raytheon Corporation for 35 years. After his retirement, Gerrit went on to become a volunteer tax preparer for the elderly AARP in Billerica for 16 years. He was also dedicated to volunteering as a class assistant in the Engineering Academy at Nashoba Valley Technical High School. Gerrit was probably best known for his nine year role as scoutmaster of Troop 74 based out of the Central Congregational Church in Chelmsford.
