Obituary for John Gerald Coppinger

John Gerald  Coppinger
Tewksbury- John Gerald Coppinger, 90, a longtime Chelmsford resident, died peacefully, Saturday, September 17, 2016 at Blair House Nursing Home in Tewksbury. He was the beloved husband of the late Margaret (Walsh) Coppinger.

John was born in Portland, Maine on November 17, 1925. He was the son of the late Patrick Francis and Margaret (Cloherty) Coppinger. John was raised and educated in South Portland, Maine.

He proudly served his country during WWII in the United State Army until he was honorably discharged in August of 1946.

John was employed as a Data Processing Manager for First National Grocery Stores and later retired from Digital Equipment Corporation.

He was a life member and was a past Commander of VFW Post 832 of South Portland, Maine. He was a Past President of the Data Processing Manager Association of Maine. John was also a 4th Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus, a member of the Chelmsford Elks, John served as a Chelmsford Town Meeting Representative and Board of Appeals member. He was a member of the Billerica Irish American Club where he was a past Chairman of the Board of Directors and Vice President. For many years he volunteered his time delivering Meals on Wheels.

John is survived by his three children, Barbara Whitney and her husband David Jr. of North Chelmsford , John Gregory Coppinger of Jackson Heights, NY, Patrick Coppinger and his wife Kimberlly of Dracut. His brother Francis Coppinger of Rutland, VT; his four grandchildren, David Richard and Megan Whitney; Samantha and Jaclyn Coppinger; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, September 21st from 9:30 until 10:30 AM at Blake Funeral Home, 24 Worthen Street, Chelmsford.

His Funeral Mass will follow at 11 AM in St. Mary Church, 25 N. Rd, Chelmsford.

Interment in Calvary Cemetery, Portland, ME at 2 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John's name to the Alzheimer's Association Massachusetts/New Hampshire, 480 Pleasant Street, Watertown, MA 02472.
