Obituary for David S. Vokey

CHELMSFORD--David Selby Vokey, 69, a longtime resident of Chelmsford, passed away Monday, December 5, 2016 after a brief battle with Cancer.

David was born in Newfoundland, Canada on December 20, 1946, the son of Bernadette M. (Walker) Vokey and the late Martin C. Vokey.

David was a loyal employee of MIT-Lincoln Laboratory in Lexington for more than 35 years, most recently as a Project Mechanic. David was also a veteran and supported the VFW organization.

David was the type of man who worked hard to provide for his family and he was honest. He believed in giving people a break and always looked out for the underdog. David had a brilliant mind for all things mechanical and truly enjoyed trying to figure out how things work. He looked at life through a different lens. He was a man who saw beauty and peace in the spaces in between. He loved a cool summer evening, a good sunset and catching a fleeting glimpse of an animal scooting through the yard. While he respected the quiet beauty that nature can bring, he also celebrated the sound of a Harley blasting down the road. To him, that sound of the Harley was also “beauty”. His belief in hard work, fairness, and honesty live on in his daughters; along with his sense of humor and the ability to view sarcasm as a sign of intelligence and a form of art.

David is predeceased by his wife, Mary Ellen (Hawkins) Vokey. Following her passing in October 2014, David felt like half of him was missing. The family hopes that now, he will feel whole again.

David is survived by his daughters Kelly Vokey and Tracy Vokey and their husbands Leo Carr and Mark Brophy; along with his grandaughters Hannah Carr and Emma Carr. David is also survived by his mother Bernadette Vokey, his sister in law Elizabeth Hawkins and his brother in law Robert Hawkins. In addition to his wife, Mary (Hawkins) Vokey, David is predeceased by his father Martin C. Vokey and his brother Roger Vokey.

Visitation will be held on Friday from 4 to7 pm at the Blake Funeral Home, 24 Worthen St., Chelmsford.

Funeral Service and interment in Pine Ridge Cemetery will be private.

For those who desire donations in David's memory may be made to Merrimack Valley Hospice, 360 Merrimack St., Bldg. 9, Lawrence, MA 01843.
