James J.  Kerrigan Sr.
James J. Kerrigan Sr., 84 of Venice, Florida passed away on November 30 following a brief illness. Kerrigan was born in North Chelmsford, Massachusetts on March 6, 1932 to the late Thomas and Ellen Kerrigan. Kerrigan was pre-deceased by his four siblings Margaret Cote, Helen Baker, Thomas Kerrigan, and Mary Strand. He was the son-in-law of the late Catherine Lord and her husband the late Raymond J. Lord former Mayor of Lowell, State Representative, and Lowell City Councilor.

Kerrigan is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years Lorraine F. (Lord) Kerrigan and his four children and extended family including his daughter Katherine Judge and her husband John Judge of Sandwich, MA; and his three sons James Kerrigan Jr. and his wife Kathleen Kerrigan of Plymouth, MA; Kenneth Kerrigan Sr. and his wife Elizabeth Kerrigan of Fairfax, Virginia; and Mark Kerrigan of Bourne, MA. He will be fondly remembered by his nine grandchildren Kerri Judge and her wife Katrina Judge; Brian Judge and his wife Jennifer Judge; Kara Crean and her husband Joseph Crean; Katelyn Kerrigan and her fiancé Keith Salome; James Kerrigan; Kenneth Kerrigan Jr.; Sean Kerrigan; Kyle Kerrigan; Kalleigh Kerrigan; and his three great- grandchildren Samuel Judge; Beau Judge; and Owen Crean. Kerrigan was a very loving, caring, and supportive father and grandfather.

Kerrigan graduated from Chelmsford High School in 1950. He was a star athlete and was best known as an outstanding football player. Kerrigan was also a boxer in the New England Golden Gloves followed by a brief career as a professional boxer. He served as a police officer and detective with the Chelmsford Police Department for 28 years before needing to retire as a result of a serious gunshot wound while on duty in 1985. Kerrigan spent the first several years of his retirement in Sandwich, Massachusetts before moving to Venice, Florida in 1996. While living in Sandwich, Kerrigan played softball for many years in the Cape Cod Senior Softball League and enjoyed participating in several national softball tournaments with his teammates.

He was the former owner of Elite Motors in North Chelmsford and coached Little League baseball for many years in Chelmsford once leading his team to Chelmsford’s first District Little League championship.

Kerrigan has often been described by many as a sweet and gentle man who loved spending time with family and friends. He particularly enjoyed time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. While living in Florida he remained a passionate and loyal fan of the Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots, and Boston Bruins.

Kerrigan was a member of the Massachusetts Retired Police Officers Association; Massachusetts County and Municipal Employees Association; Chelmsford Lodge of Elks; and the Venice Loyal Order of Moose. He was formerly a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Chelmsford and most recently was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes in Venice.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.). Each year, between 140 and 160 officers are killed in the line of duty and their families and co-workers are left to cope with the tragic loss. C.O.P.S. provides resources to help them rebuild their shattered lives.

C.O.P.S. was organized in 1984 with 110 individual members. Today C.O.P.S. membership is over 37,000 survivors. All programs and services are administered by the National Office in Camdenton, Missouri. C.O.P.S. has over 50 Chapters nationwide that work with survivors at the grass-roots level.
