Obituary for John A. Madigan

John A. Madigan died January 9, 2017 after a long illness. A retired former Foreign Service Officer, John had assignments in Vienna, Austria and Surabaya, Indonesia, before settling in Virginia. There he continued his work with the State Department, becoming its' main bibliographer.

John grew up in Watertown, MA, graduating from Boston College High School and Boston College. He also received Master's Degrees in German at the University of Kansas and in Political Science at Notre Dame University. After his retirement, he moved to Chelmsford, MA.

John enjoyed listening to classical and jazz music, watching college football and basketball, reading books about history, and investigating family history.

John leaves a sister, Anne Murphy of Chelmsford and a brother, Paul Madigan Ret. USN of Lemon Grove, CA; his nieces, Maryanne Mills of Chelmsford, Elizabeth Musser of Malden, and Kathleen Dorworth of LaMesa, CA; and a nephew, Kevin Madigan of Lemon Grove, CA.

The family wants to especially thank the Chelmsford Fire and Police Departments who helped John in many emergency situations before he became confined to assisted living.

Visiting hours will be held on Monday from 9:00 to 10:30 AM at the BLAKE FUNERAL HOME, 24 Worthen St., CHELMSFORD followed by his Funeral Mass at 11 o'clock at St. Mary Parish, 25 North Rd., Chelmsford. Interment will take place at 12:45 pm at St. Joseph Cemetery, 990 LaGrange St., West Roxbury, MA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Mary's Building Fund, 115 Middlesex St., N.
