Obituary for Victor A. DeMarines

Victor A.  DeMarines
HOLLIS, NH- Victor A. DeMarines, a resident of Hollis, NH and Florida and former longtime Chelmsford resident passed away on August 30th, 2017. He was the loving husband of Dorothy M. (Kuhn) DeMarines of Hollis, NH.

Born in Blacklick, PA on March 17, 1937, he was a son born to Italian immigrants Victor and Charlotte (Bernini) DeMarines. He was proud of his humble beginnings from a small coal mining town.

Victor graduated from Penn State in 1958 with a BS in aeronautical engineering and became a first lieutenant in the US Air Force. In 1959 he began his Air Force career at Lincoln Project Office at Hanscom Air Force Base in Bedford. He got his Master of Science degree in electrical engineering from Northeastern University in 1962. Victor was a 37 year veteran of MITRE when he was appointed President and CEO in 1996. Vic’s tenure at Mitre was notable for having risen through the ranks to lead the company. An innovator in networking, he authored many articles and originated patents on local area network (LAN) techniques.
A recipient of many honors and awards, he was most proud of the honor given him in 2001, by the Director of Central Intelligence, George Tenet, who presented Vic with the Agency Seal Medallion. The award, the highest honor given to anyone outside of the CIA, praised DeMarines and MITRE for pioneering bold programs resulting in highly innovative, unique, and invaluable computer technology support to the agency's mission.

Following retirement, Vic continued to do important work as director and subsequently Chairman and Chairman of the Board for Verint Systems Inc., from 2008 until his illness. He has been an Independent Director of NetScout Systems, Inc. since June 15, 2004. He was a member of an advisory group for the National Reconnaissance Office and the Massachusetts Business Roundtable.

An avid golfer, Vic could shoot his age. He was a member to the Vesper Country Club in Tyngsborough and Bonita Bay Club in Naples, Florida. Victor was a craftsman, when he had free time he spent it working with his hands. He built a garage, two canoes and even a television, proud that it worked. He was a sportsman who loved to ride his bike and run, competing in the Boston Marathon in 1980.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a son and daughter-in-law Victor DeMarines and his wife, Linda of Pepperell, MA; his daughter and son-in-law, Melinda Miller and her husband, Hank of Weston, MA; a son-in-law, Mark Ferri of Windham, NH; loving mentor and advisor to his seven grandchildren, Christopher and Jonathan Ferri, Eric and Jennifer DeMarines, Larson, Max and Nathalie Miller; a sister, Joanne Joyce of Rochester, NY; a brother and sister-in-law, Ron DeMarines and his wife, Jane of Washington, D.C.; many brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, colleagues and dear friends.

Victor was predeceased by his beloved daughter Maria Ferri.

Visitation will be held on Monday, September 4th from 3PM until 7PM in the Blake Chelmsford Funeral Home, 24 Worthen Street, Chelmsford.

His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday morning at 11AM in St. Mary’s Church, 25 North Road, Chelmsford.
