Life Story for Claire L. Dunning (Burton)

Claire L. Dunning (Burton)
ASSONET-Claire Lois (Burton) Dunning, 91 of Assonet, MA, and formerly of Tyngsboro, MA passed away peacefully on September 7, 2017 (her 91st birthday) in Fall River.

Claire was born in West Chelmsford to Harry Edward and Doris Estelle (Luke) Burton on 9/7/1926. She attended Chelmsford schools and graduated from Chelmsford High School in 1944. She married Raymond Kenneth Dunning on December 10, 1945. Claire was a homemaker and raised four children in Tyngsboro. She and husband Ray moved to Assonet from Tyngsboro in 1986.

Claire was an avid gardener and with son Brian, created much of the floral landscape of the “Independence Harbor” gardens in Assonet. She was an accomplished baker and a wonderful cook (best carrot cake and grilled cheese sandwiches ever).

Claire loved to travel especially her frequent Aruba trips with daughter Connie and her special London/Paris trip with son Russ and family. Claire’s family was her life. Her best friends were her five sisters and her brother and their spouses. She enjoyed a close bond with her husband's brother and sisters as well, and with their children and grandchildren. She treasured family so very much. Always with a tender smile and a comforting word, Claire was known to many as "Mrs.D", and to a special few as "Mimi Dunning". She holds a very special place in so many hearts.

Claire is predeceased by her beloved husband Raymond, her sister Phillis (Burton) Lovett, and her brother Vernon Burton.

Claire is survived by her daughter Connie of Assonet, MA, and three sons; Russell Dunning and his wife Sallie of Newton, Dennis Dunning and his wife Kathy of Tyngsboro, and Brian Dunning and his wife Anne of East Bridgewater. She is survived by four sisters; Evelyn Roberts of Quincy, Thelma Vance and her husband Richard of Pepperell, Lorna Aham of Lowell, and Sylvia Pokraka of West Warwick, R.I., and Sister in Law, Helen Burton of East Chelmsford. Claire is also survived by seven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren and many cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A memorial event in Celebration of Claire’s life will be held at Independence Harbor of Assonet in later September. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the American Red Cross or to your favorite charity in Claire’s name. Arrangements under the care of BLAKE CHELMSFORD FUNERAL HOME, 24 Worthen Street, CHELMSFORD, MA, 01824.
