Alan D. McKersie Sr. Obituary (1931 - 2024)

Alan David McKersie, Sr., 93, a longtime resident of Chelmsford, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, at DYouville Senior Care, Lowell, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Jane (Turner) McKersie with whom he shared 72 years of marriage. He was born in Paterson, NJ on February 27, 1931, and was the son of the late Robert Fleming and Marion (Whittaker) McKersie. Alan met the love of his life Jane on a blind date while he was attending RPI in Troy, NY. They married on September 11, 1952. Shortly thereafter, he joined the Air Force and served a year in Korea. After several moves, Alan and Jane settled in Chelmsford in 1960. He was very active at Central Congregational Church, having served on many committees, including the diaconate, treasurer, and house committee. Alan participated in two overseas trips: one to Germany and one to England as a member of the choir. For many years, he worked at Mitre in Bedford as a department head in the System Engineering Department. Upon his retirement from Mitre in 1991, he started a new career as he said hammer swinger for Habitat for Humanity. He volunteered at over a dozen build sites across the US and Canada. Alan was also a member of the Chelmsford Colonial Minuteman and participated in and enjoyed many marches and parades. Al was the ultimate family man and enjoyed participating in and introducing his children, nieces and nephews to sailing, canoeing, and water skiing. He also enjoyed getting his family involved in Habitat for Humanity and trail maintenance in New Hampshire. His gentle spirit will be missed by all. The McKersie family would like to thank the staff at DYouville Senior Care for the kindness and care given to Alan. In addition to his loving wife Jane, Alan leaves his children, Alan D. McKersie, Jr. and his wife Dawn of Newark, DE, Edward S. McKersie and his wife Melissa of Falmouth, ME, and Kathryn A. Doyle and her husband Edward of Chelmsford; his five grandchildren; two great granddaughters; and his brother Robert B. McKersie. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, July 13, 2024, at 10 am at Central Congregational Church UCC, One Worthen St., Chelmsford. Kindly gather at the church. Interment will be held privately.
