Ann M. Sides Obituary (1914 - 2014)

Ann M. (Mathern) Sides, 99 a longtime resident of Chelmsford and former resident of Sun City, AZ passed away on March 16, 2014 at her home. She was the beloved wife of the late Andrew R. Sides Sr. whom she married on October 24, 1943 in Pacific Palisades, CA. They were married for 63 years. She was born in Toledo, Iowa on September 8, 1914 a daughter of the late Joseph and Susan (Abbey) Mathern. She attended Tama County schools, and graduated from Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa. After college, Ann spent four years teaching in the Iowa Country School System. She also spent four years running the office of the farm bureau and she was in charge of the 4H Program in Ida Grove, Iowa. She then moved to California where she met and then married her husband, Andrew. While in California, she worked as a secretary for the Colgate Palmolive Company. Because Andrew was in the military, they moved many times. First to Fort Hood, TX, and then on to Oklahoma, Iowa, and Maine before settling in Massachusetts. Once they were settled in Chelmsford, Ann returned to teaching for 13 years in the Chelmsford Elementary Schools. She truly enjoyed her time as a teacher. She was also a longtime member of All Saints Episcopal Church, the Chelmsford Garden Club, The College Club, and the Massachusetts Teachers Association. She enjoyed gardening, quilting, and needlepoint. She enjoyed traveling and felt she learned a great deal in life while traveling around North America and Europe. Ann is survived by her two sons, Andrew R. Sides Jr. and his wife Pamela A. (Perham) of Chelmsford and Stephen M. Sides and his wife Carol E. (Sanford) of Tyngsboro. Four grandchildren; Mark C. Sides of Chelmsford, Kenneth A. Sides of Tyngsboro, Johanna B. Porter and her husband Timothy of Hudson, NH, and Kathryn Flaherty and her husband David of Tyngsboro. Ann also leaves four great-grandchildren; Connor T. Flaherty, Kenleigh A. Flaherty, Andrew C. Porter and Cameron T. Porter. She was predeceased by five brothers and five sisters. The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the staff of The Meadow Lodge of North Chelmsford and the Essy Nursing Service for the care they gave to Ann. Visitation will take place on Friday, March 28, 2014 from 12 to 1 pm at Blake Funeral Home, 24 Worthen St. CHELMSFORD. Her funeral service will follow at 1 oclock at the funeral home.
