Elizabeth A Hawkins Obituary (1949 - 2017)

Lexington--Elizabeth (Betsy) A. Hawkins, 68, a lifelong resident of Lexington, passed away in the early morning hours of Sunday, November 26, 2017 following her battle with Cancer. Betsy was born in Cambridge on March 18, 1949, the youngest daughter of the late Warren and Rita (Dinan) Hawkins. She graduated from Lexington High School then went on to nursing school where she graduated from the Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing in 1970. Betsy worked as a nurse for more than 15 years at hospitals in the Boston area, including Mass General and Sancta Maria. She was a caregiver by nature and continued her service in the medical field when she transitioned to MassPro in Waltham and later to John Hancock. Betsy believed in family and friends first. She loved to chat with friends and family over a cup of tea. She had a beautiful open mind and accepted people for who they are. Betsy was a champion for the underdog and would always stop to listen or help someone out. She enjoyed quiet moments but also loved the wildness of family getting together, dogs and all. Betsy was passionate about her work, her family, friends, the Red Sox and politics. It was not uncommon to hear her yelling at the television when the Red Sox, Bruins, or politics were on. She loved to travel with friends and spent some time living in Hawaii. But, even with all of her travels, her heart was always home and, to her, home was with her family. Betsy cherished her summers and vacations spent on Plum Island with family and friends. It was her true happy place. We, her family, believe that her spirit will live on in the ocean air of the island. We will celebrate her beautiful spirit and remember her laughter every time we cross the drawbridge to the island. Betsy is survived by her brother, Robert Hawkins; her two nieces, Kelly Vokey and Tracy Vokey and their husbands, Leo Carr and Mark Brophy; her two great nieces, Hannah Carr and Emma Carr; and her canine niece and nephew, Sierra Carr and Harry Vokey-Brophy. Betsy is also survived by numerous loving cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends who are family. Betsy is predeceased by her big sister Mary Ellen Vokey, who passed in 2014. May they be drinking tea as they watch over us all. Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday from 4 to 7 pm at the Blake Chelmsford Funeral Home, 24 Worthen St., Chelmsford. Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thurs at 11 am at St. Mary Parish, 25 North Rd., Chelmsford. KINDLY MEET AT CHURCH. Interment immediately following in Pine Ridge Cemetery, Chelmsford.
