Harry Gong

Harry Gong, 81, of Chelmsford passed away peacefully at home on June 10, 2023, six months after being diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). He was married to his inseparable partner and teammate, Joan (Wandrei) Gong.

Born and raised in New York City, Harry studied Electrical Engineering, earning his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Columbia University. He then moved to Massachusetts, working at the MITRE Corporation in Bedford, supporting various Air Force programs, especially in the communications area, until retiring in 2004. Upon retirement, he immediately started volunteering for the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program, helping thousands of local taxpayers file their returns over the subsequent 20 years. In addition to preparing returns, he also served as a volunteer leader, coordinating all Tax-Aide activities in the greater Lowell area as well as serving as lead trainer for Massachusetts. Despite his illness, he continued to volunteer during the latest tax season - working from home until the end of the filing season in April. When remembering Harry, the phrase most often heard is he was a mentor to me. In his spare time, he also enjoyed yard work and gardening and was an inaugural member of the W. F. Lewis Community Garden in Chelmsford.

In addition to his wife, Harry is survived by his son Greg, wife Julie and their son Lucas of New York, and his son Derek, wife Sabina and their children Derek, Thalia and Dallas of Waltham. He also leaves his sister Sally of New York, his brother George of Massachusetts, and former spouse Liz of Florida. He was predeceased by his brother Harold.
