Malcolm Y MacKinnon Obituary (1926 - 2016)

MARSHFIELD - Malcolm Y. MacKinnon, 89, a resident of Marshfield, formerly of Holden, Millis, Westwood and Dedham, passed away on Tuesday, November 1, 2016 at the Newfield House in Plymouth. He was the beloved husband of the late Patricia Ann (Fallon) MacKinnon who died in 2008 after sharing 57 years of marriage. He was born in Quincy on December 5, 1926 and raised in Wellesley, the son of the late Archibald and Josephine (Young) MacKinnon. Mr. MacKinnon was a graduate of Boston College High School. He received a certificate from Harvard Business School Trade Union Program where he graduated as Valedictorian. He later received an Honorary Doctorate Degree from Stonehill College. Mr. MacKinnon was a veteran of the United States Army having served during WWII. Mr. MacKinnon began his career as an apprentice printer at the Dedham Transcript, became the President of the Boston Typographical Union, State Arbitrator for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and retired as Industrial Relations Director of the Boston Globe. Governor Sargent appointed Mr. MacKinnon to the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education, of which he served as Chairman. He was awarded the Labor Guilds Cushing-Gavin Award by the Archdiocese of Boston. Awardees are selected for their commitment to labor-management relations, professional competence, moral integrity and concern for the community. As a civic-minded individual, Mr. MacKinnon served on several town committees, and was recognized with the Distinguished Citizen Award from the Town of Millis. Mr. MacKinnon was a devout Catholic with a strong faith in God. He cherished and adored his wife Pat. During their 57 years of marriage, they enjoyed spending time with their children and grandchildren while traveling and seeking out new adventures. He was an avid hockey player, having played for BC High and remained a fan of the sport throughout his life. Mr. MacKinnon is survived by his five children Michael Young MacKinnon and his wife Dr. Laura MacKinnon of Bonita, CA, Dianne MacKinnon Harrison and her husband Kenneth of Kingston, MA, Edward James MacKinnon and his wife Christine of Chelmsford, MA, Patricia MacKinnon Clair of Wethersfield, CT, and Robert Archibald MacKinnon and his wife Jacquelyn of Temecula, CA, 17 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was the brother of the late George Young MacKinnon. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 9 to 10:30 am at the Blake Funeral Home, 24 Worthen St., Chelmsford followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 o'clock at St. Mary Parish, 25 North Rd., Chelmsford.
