Matthew J. Powers

–

Chelmsford, Massachusetts

Matthew J. Powers, age 67, a longtime resident of Chelmsford, passed away peacefully at Lowell General Hospital on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Nancy M. (McDonald) Powers, with whom he enjoyed 41 years of marriage.

He was born in Boston on May 6, 1959, and was the son of the late Robert and Nancy (Rooney) Powers.

Matt was raised in Lexington, Massachusetts in a busy household with his six siblings and two loving parents. He graduated from Lexington High School, class of 1977. Matt remained close with many of his high school friends throughout his life. He always looked forward to their legendary annual ice fishing trip with his high school buddies reminiscing of their glory days on the football field and hockey rink. He went on to attend the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (formerly North Adams State College) before building a successful career in business development within the software sales industry.

A lifelong sports fan, Matt loved cheering on his favorite Boston teams, especially the Bruins, Patriots, and Red Sox. But his most favorite thing to watch were his three kids playing their favorite sports. He was never shy to dip out of work early to be at the start of every football, hockey, and field hockey game.

Matt and Nancy shared many special memories throughout their 41 years together. In the early years of their family life, they enjoyed camping when their children were young and spending summers on Cape Cod with the Powers clan. Their first home together was in Burlington, Massachusetts, where all three of their children were born. They later settled in Chelmsford, where they continued to build a life filled with family, friendships, and cherished memories.

Above all, Matt was a devoted, family-oriented man who cherished the time spent with those he loved. A few of his favorite past times were enjoying summer nights sitting out on the deck watching the red sox with Nancy, winter nights were spent in his family room with a crackling fire, car rides in his Corvair with the top down, and taking his two grandsons on tractor rides. He was always willing to lend a hand to any family or friend who needed one. Matt had a special relationship with his in-laws and always looked forward to their Sunday night dinners (unless it was in the middle of a Pat’s game!). Matt had a special gift for connecting with people – forming relationships that left a deep and lasting impact on everyone he met.

In addition to his loving wife, Nancy, Matt is survived by his children, Katie Newcomb and her husband, Sean, Molly Rich and her husband, Ben, and his son, Matthew Powers, Jr. and his fiancée, Tara McMahan; and his two beloved grandsons, Jack and Jimmy. He is also survived by his siblings, Carol Jennings, Robert Powers, Tom Powers, Nancy Gunning, Christine Sardinskas, and Diane Lima, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends.

Memorial donations may be made in Matthew’s memory to Dominantly Inherited Alzheimer’s Network: Trial Unit. Honoring his high school buddy, John Leach and father-in-law, Walter McDonald.

Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Blake Chelmsford Funeral Home, 24 Worthen St., Chelmsford. His funeral service and interment will be held privately.
