Maurice “Mo” Alexander Obituary (1926

Sadly, the world has lost another member of the Greatest Generation. At 97, Maurice Mo Alexander passed away on August 2, 2023 with his daughter and her husband by his side. He joins his wife Marge and his son Jeff as well his daughter-in-law Helene. He will be greatly missed by his son Stephen Maurice Alexander of Mililani, HI (wife Diane, daughter Rebecca); daughter Dawn Alexander of Lunenburg, MA (husband Bob); and his two grandsons Shawn Alexander of Battle Ground, WA (wife Aimee, daughter Hannah, son Michael) and Chad Alexander of Portland, OR (wife Lynn, son Eli). Maurice was the oldest of 9 children of which 3 remain; Robert Alexander, Nola Hanson and George Alexander living in Maurice's beloved state of Texas. Born January 24, 1926 in Fairfield, Nebraska to Velda and Jessie Alexander, Maurice and family moved to San Antonio, TX shortly thereafter. He attended schools at South San Antonio, graduating from South San High School in May 1943. While in his senior year, he also attended US Civil Service electronics and radio school and was called into active duty as a Marine in June 1943. He enlisted as a private and received considerable training and experience in electronics and missile systems. He saw action in WWII and the Korean War working on aircraft radar and electronic systems. He worked his way from enlisting as a Private to Officer School and ultimately promoted to Major receiving many commendations and decorations along the way: Purple Heart, Presidential Unit Citation, Korean Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal and several others. He was also an accomplished sharp shooter. His military career led him and his family to live in many places including Ohio, Virginia, Texas and finally Fresno, California where he retired in 1966 after 23 years of distinguished service. From Fresno, the family moved across the country and settled in Chelmsford, MA. Maurice was then working at Raytheon as a Project Engineer. Although he never earned a college degree, he had extensive training and was requested to work with various engineer groups. He designed a switching control for radar equipment as well as the design requirements to inhibit radiation should the radar stop rotating. His second retirement was after 22 years at Raytheon. Maurice had many hobbies woodworking, gardening, rock-hunting, fishing, camping and hunting. Golfing was perhaps his favorite, he was very good at it. He started playing as a teen and was a welcomed addition to the Marine Corps golf team wherever he was stationed. His home course was Chelmsford Country Club where he was Club Champion at 79 years old. His other passion at the golf course was searching for golf balls! As he and Marge aged, taking care of their home became a burden, so they moved to RiverCourt Residences in Groton, MA. Marge passed after living there a short time, but Maurice went on to become a thriving member of the community. He would play his harmonica as residents were gathering to go to the dining room for meals. He loved to share stories and enjoyed the musical performances held there. He would join in by singing along or playing his harmonica. He left an impression on so many and will be dearly missed. His Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, October 18, 2023 at 9 am at the Blake Chelmsford Funeral Home, 24 Worthen St., Chelmsford. Interment will follow in Pine Ridge Cemetery, Chelmsford.
