CHELMSFORD - Norah Brady Gambon left this world as she entered it; at home surrounded by her loving family. Born in Lowell on June 14th, 1918, Norah was the youngest of 10 children born to Martin Brady and
Norah (Healy) Brady. Norah passed away peacefully at her home in Chelmsford on Saturday September 21, 2013. She was 95. Norah was a devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, and friend. She was the widow of Christopher L. Gambon. They were married on October 28, 1950 at St. Michael's Church in Lowell and shared 37 years of loving marriage.
Born and raised in the Centralville section of Lowell, Norah was a graduate of St. Michaels Grammar School, Lowell High School, and Lowell Commercial College. She also attended George Washington University. During World War II Norah relocated to Washington D.C. to work in the U.S. War Department. She later returned to Lowell and was employed with the U.S. Department of the Navy, and the Department of Veterans Affairs. It was there she met her future husband, a veteran of World War II and the Normandy invasion. They raised their family in Chelmsford. They were devoted to their family, country, faith, and their Irish heritage. Norah and Chris enjoyed family dinners and conversation, vacations, traveling, the Red Sox and Sunday drives. After raising her family, Nora returned to work at the University of Lowell, for the Athletics Department and later the Economics Department, retiring in 1981.
Norah enjoyed a long and active retirement, volunteering at the Chelmsford Senior Center and at the Harrington School. Norah travelled extensively with her children. During one memorable trip to Ireland with her children, her brother Stephen and several of her nieces and nephews, Norah visited her parents birthplaces in County Galway. Norah was a faithful communicant of Saint Mary Parish in Chelmsford.
Norah is survived by five devoted and loving children; Andrew and his companion Karen Haggerty of Chelmsford, Mary of Lowell, Donna of Chelmsford, Christopher S. and his wife Susan of Chelmsford, and Virgilia (Jill) and her husband Michael Mokrzycki of West Newbury. She is also survived by four loving grandchildren, Christopher J. Gambon of Lowell, Brady and Connor Mokrzycki of West Newbury and Ryan Haggerty of Chelmsford as well as many loving nieces and nephews.
Norahs open and generous heart brought many moments of joy to those around her. Family, friends, and visitors were always welcome into Norahs home with good humor and a hot cup of tea.
Norah was pre-deceased by her brothers and sisters, Bernard, Patrick, Stephen, Thomas, James, Mary (SR. Virgilia O.P.), Catherine Mahoney, Anna McMahon, and Johann Brady.
Norahs family is grateful that Nora was blessed with dedicated caregivers, Elaine, Corrine, Jean and many attentive medical professionals during her last days.
