Olimpiu N. Albu Obituary (1948 - 2024)

Olimpiu N. Albu, 76, a resident of Chelmsford for over 30 years, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 22, 2024, at DYouville Senior Care, Lowell. He was born on February 22, 1948, in Ludos, Sibiu County, Romania, to Olympia Maria Albu and Nicolae Albu. His first language was Romanian, and he was fluent in German and polished his English after he immigrated to the US in 1990. Soon after he came to America, he met through church the wonderful family of the late Mary Currie. Mary opened her home for him and treated him like a son. It was about the same time of the year and, when people asked her, somewhat worried, about taking a stranger in, Mary said, how could you leave somebody in the cold especially now, during Christmas time?. That summarizes the strong relationship that built up over the years between the Curries and Olimpiu, who they called Ollie. Up to his last moments Steve Currie, Marys son, as well as Maeghan Dillon, Marys granddaughter were on Ollies side comforting and caring. In 1973 Olimpiu graduated from Polytechnical Institute in Iasi, Romania, where he majored in civil engineering, followed by mandatory 6 months of Romanian military service. In his native country, Olimpiu was a dedicated general manager of the highway department of Brasov, while here in MA he tirelessly worked for more than twenty years for the Newton Highway Department. He held patents in concrete and highway construction. In his free time Olimpiu enjoyed spending time at Hampton Beach, and after retirement, he went back to Romania several times for high school reunions or to visit his nephew, Serban Bucur and his wife Bianca Bucur, and his niece, Sanda Bucur. He leaves his brother, Mihai Albu Sr. and his wife Diana Albu of Westford, his nephew Mihai Albu Jr. and his spouse Hanz Atia of Somerville, his niece Stefana Dunn and her husband Jacob Dunn of Sudbury, as well as his kind-hearted friends Stephen Currie and Maeghan Dillon of Chelmsford who took great care of him in the past couple of years and especially in the last two difficult months of his life. He was predeceased by his parents Olympia Maria and Nicolae Albu and by his elder sister and brother-in-law, Adriana and Cornel Bucur from Sibiu, Romania. Memorial donations may be made in his name to St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, December 26, 2024, from 2 pm 4 pm at the Blake Chelmsford Funeral Home, 24 Worthen St., Chelmsford. His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, at 9 am, at St. Mary Parish, 25 North Rd., Chelmsford. KINDLY GATHER AT THE CHURCH. Interment to follow in Pine Ridge Cemetery, Chelmsford.
