CHELMSFORD - Esther M. Aho, 86, of Chelmsford, passed away on Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at Palm Manor Nursing Home in Chelmsford MA.

Esther was born in Fitchburg Mass, March 28, 1928, the daughter of John William and Annie (Laiho) Aho. She grew up in Lunenburg and graduated from Lunenburg High in 1946, and from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY in 1950. Esther pursued her advanced academic degrees in economics and space technology at Boston University, the University of California at Santa Barbara and at Harvard University.

Esther was a computer engineer and programmer in the aerospace and computer industries. She worked on the Atlas, Titan, and Minuteman missiles, and the Saturn moon rocket. Later, she worked as a software engineer at Honeywell and retired from Honeywell-Bull.
In her retirement, Esther tutored blind and other handicapped children in the use of computers and the Internet.

Esther leaves her devoted and appreciated nephew Michael Hamel and his wife Janice and their children Allison and Erik of Baldwinville; James Hamel and his wife Kathleen of Missouri; John Hamel and his wife Roberta and their family of Pepperell; her sister-in-law Elaine Aho of Townsend; several grand nieces and grand nephews; her cousins William Aho of Florida, Alvar Laiho and his wife Cindy of Maine; and Harry Laiho of Helsinki Finland; her beloved and best friend Linda Larrabee and Ronald Tarbell; and her appreciated friends, Stephen Coughlin; Cyndi Johnson, and Cathy Gray.

She was the loving sister of the late Alice Aho and the late Richard Aho. Esther was broken hearted by the death in June of 2012 of her wonderful companion, Pomeranian, Cricket.

It being her wish, Funeral Services and interment are private. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Esther’s memory to the Chelmsford Firefighters Association, 7 North Rd., Chelmsford, MA 01824.
