Thomas M. O’Brien, Jr. of Kittery, ME, formerly of Lowell, husband of Irene P. (Klatka) O’Brien died Sunday November 8, 2015 at The Oceanside Nursing Facility in Hampton, NH.

Born in Lowell on July 13, 1919, he was a son of the late Thomas M. and Alice I. (Mealey) O’Brien. He was a lifelong resident of Lowell until he relocated to Nashua in 1991.

Thomas was a graduate of St. Michael’s grammar school, Lowell High School class of 1937, and was a veteran of two and one-half years of service in the United States Navy during World War II as a petty officer- second class.

He was a civilian employee of the U.S. Department of the Navy continuously from 1940 until his retirement in 1981 except for active duty in the uniformed Navy during WWII. He was employed at the Boston Naval Shipyard until its closure in 1974 and at Supship Boston until his retirement. He was the recipient of many awards for his service including a citation from the secretary of the Navy for forty years of service and the Department of the Navy’s Meritorious Civilian Service Medal.

He was a former communicant of St. Rita’s Church in Lowell. Thomas was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Thomas M. O’Brien III of Chelmsford; James S. O’Brien and his wife, Mary Anne (Vieira) of Southington, CT; five grandchildren, Lindsay A. Fitton, Thomas M. O’Brien IV, Tyler J. O’Brien, Michael J. O’Brien and Kevin P. O’Brien; and two great grandchildren, Colin and Noelle Fitton. He was the father-in-law of the late Virginia A. O’Brien and brother of the late Paul, Edward and Frank O’Brien, Doris Hayes and Alice Callahan.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Graveside Service for Thomas on Tuesday November 10, 2015 at 11:30 AM in the chapel at St. Mary Cemetery, 90 River Road, Tewksbury, MA 01876. Arrangements under the care of BLAKE FUNERAL HOME, 24 Worthen Street, Chelmsford, MA 01824.
