CHELMSFORD- Rita M. (Callahan) Doherty, 84, a longtime resident of Chelmsford passed away peacefully with her loving family by her side on Tuesday June 27, 2017. She was the loving wife of the late William D. Doherty, Sr.

Born in Boston, MA on February 27, 1933, she was a daughter of the late Joseph J. and Marguerite K. (Maloney) Callahan and stepdaughter of the late Jeanette (Poirier) Callahan.

Rita’s work life included a 30 year career as Executive Secretary at Purity Supreme grocers where she retired in 1996. She was a communicant at St. Mary Church, a longtime member of The Chelmsford Country Club, and an active member of the Chelmsford and Billerica Senior Centers.

In her later years, Rita loved travelling with friends and relatives, she treasured the company of her family at Bishop Street celebrations, she enjoyed long weekends on the cape with her sisters - the “Clam” sisters, and she enjoyed a busy social calendar with a wide circle of good friends and neighbors.

Rita is survived by her children and their spouses, William Doherty, Jr. of Nashua, NH; Diane Moore and her husband, David of Dover, NH; Janice Clement and her husband, Robert of Tyngsboro; Joseph Doherty and his wife, Nancy of Southboro; a sister, Jean Fleury of Carver; a sister-in-law, Elaine Doherty of Norwood; 8 grandchildren, Daniel Doherty, Melissa Moore, Caitlin Scott, Brian Clement, Julianne Clement, Meghan Doherty, Sean Doherty, Brian Doherty; 7 great grandchildren, Caiden and Declan Doherty, Charles and Thomas Scott, June and Josephine Doucette, and Henry Clement; many loving nieces, nephews , in-laws and dear friends. She was predeceased by her daughter-in-law, Karen Doherty and by her siblings, Joseph Callahan, Jr., Gerald Callahan and Doris Mulhall.

Relatives and friends are invited to her visitation on Friday June 30, 2017 from 4 until 7 PM in the Blake Chelmsford Funeral Home, 24 Worthen Street, Chelmsford.

Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday morning at 11 AM in St. Mary Church, 25 North Rd., Chelmsford.

KINDLY MEET AT CHURCH.

Interment will follow in Pine Ridge Cemetery, Chelmsford.
