Obituary for Helen Koulas

Helen Koulas
Helen (Vrouhas) Koulas, 90, a lifelong resident of Chelmsford, passed away peacefully at her home while surrounded by her family on July 7th, 2017. She was the beloved wife of the late Charles S. Koulas who died in 2008.

She was born in Lowell on April 14, 1927, and was a daughter of the late Spiros and Theodora (Palengos) Vrouhas.

Helen was a graduate of Chelmsford High School Class of 1944. For many years, along with her husband, she operated a dairy farm in Chelmsford. She was later employed as a machine operator at Stickney & Poor Spice Co., also in Chelmsford, until her retirement. Helen had a great appreciation for a good pair of shoes and a tasteful pocketbook, and she enjoyed watching the Red Sox, eating Jax, and trying her luck at scratch tickets. Her favorite color was purple.

To Helen, her family was everything, and she treasured every moment spent with them. She was an extraordinarily hard worker in everything she did, and she passed her tremendous work ethic on to her family.

Helen is survived by her loving children; Constance K. Petricone and her husband S. Mark, Donna Koulas and her husband Douglas Calenda, and Martha Koulas Perry and her husband Christopher Perry, all of Chelmsford. She was a devoted and very proud grandmother of Elena A. Petricone, Douglas A. Calenda II, and Charles D. Calenda. Helen was the sister of the late Peter, Charles, and James Vrouhas, Gloria Zaroulis, Georgia Kostoulakos, and Olga Tsoukalas. Helen leaves many cherished nephews and nieces. She always enjoyed their visits. She also leaves her lifelong friend Kathryn Stone.

Right up until the end of her life, Helen would fondly remark how loved she felt every single day, and how well-cared for by her family and caregivers. With grateful appreciation, Helen's family would like to thank her most recent caregivers; Kathy, Sonia, Jessica, Dorothy, Mary, Esther, Diane, Diane P, and Patricia, as well as her past caregivers. They’d also like to thank Paul, Roger, and other volunteers from the Chelmsford Senior Center Meals on Wheels for their weekday visits. Furthermore, they would like to thank Dr. Roopa Reddy and her staff at Chelmsford Primary Care as well as Kathleen Simpson of Elder Services of Merrimack Valley for all that they have done for Helen over the years. Finally, Helen’s family would like to thank the Chelmsford Police and Fire Departments and Trinity Ambulance for coming to her assistance many times over the years.

Relatives and friends are invited to a visitation on Saturday, July 15th, 2017 from 9:30-11:00 am at The Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 62 Lewis St., Lowell, followed by her funeral service at 11:00 am. Interment in Westlawn Cemetery, Lowell. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Helen's name to Elder Services of Merrimack Valley, 280 Merrimack St. Suite 400, Lawrence, MA 01843.
