Obituary for James G. Mahoney

James G. Mahoney
James G. Mahoney, of Chelmsford, Mass., son of the late John R. and Ada Mahoney of Warwick, Rhode Island, died peacefully on Tuesday, August 8.

Jim was predeceased by his wife Frances (Souza) Mahoney, with whom he shared 60 years of marriage and for whom he cared for lovingly in the years prior to her death.

Born in Providence, Rhode Island on November 18, 1927, Jim was raised in Providence & Warwick, then settled in Chelmsford with his new bride in 1955, where they raised their family.

Jim is survived by his son James F. Mahoney and his wife Deborah of North Chelmsford; his son Michael E. Mahoney and his wife Diana of Nashua, NH; his grandchildren Andrew and Kathryn Mahoney of Nashua; his sister Andrea Marshall and her husband Richard of Columbia, Connecticut; his brother Peter Mahoney and his wife Sharon of Warwick, Rhode Island, and many nieces and nephews. Jim was predeceased by his brothers John (Jack) Mahoney and Paul Mahoney.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, Jim enlisted in the service in 1946 and served as a Private First Class in Heavy Weapons Infantry in the Far East Command, mainly in Korea. Upon his Honorable Discharge, Jim began his 35-year career as a graphic artist and later supervisor of the Bedford Publications Department for the Raytheon Corporation.

Above all else, Jim loved his family and would happily tell stories about growing up in Rhode Island, and especially the joys of summers on Gaspee Point in Warwick, RI. During his sons’ childhoods, Jim spent countless hours with them building boats; assembling model cars, planes, trains; and teaching them everything they needed to know to repair a car, roof a house, frame an addition, plumb an appliance, and wire a junction box. In his retirement, he took the same joy from spending time with his grandchildren, whether cheering them on at one of their sporting events or quietly drawing together.

Jim was also a talented artist and skilled craftsman. Among many other things, he built the cradle that held his grandchildren and some of their first toys, which will be forever cherished.

To share memories and celebrate Jim’s life, family and friends will gather at the BLAKE CHELMSFORD FUNERAL HOME, 24 Worthen Street, CHELMSFORD on Friday, August 11 for Visitation from 5-7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be said on Saturday, August 12 at 9 a.m. at St. Mary Church, 25 North Rd. Chelmsford, MA. Interment will follow in Pine Ridge Cemetery. Memorial donations in James Mahoney’s name may be made to American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701 (www.cancer.org)
